Choosing a Dock Ladder and Swim Accessories

A good dock ladder is one people actually use. WetSteps ladders are angled like a staircase, so swimmers walk up out of the water instead of climbing a vertical ladder. Here is what to sort out before ordering.

Pick the number of steps

The right length depends on how far the ladder needs to reach below the dock. The WetSteps 5-step ladder has a 52 in. drop below its mount, and the 6-step model reaches deeper for higher docks or bigger swings in lake level. Measure from the top of the dock down to the water at normal pool, and think about low water late in the season. See ladders.

What WetSteps ladders offer

  • All-welded aluminum with 24 in. wide non-slip steps.
  • A 500 lb capacity on the 5-step ladder when properly mounted.
  • Brackets that let the ladder rotate up out of the water for dry storage.
  • Mill finish or powder-coat paint. WetSteps offers color because bare aluminum discolors in the water.

Add-ons

  • EZ Rail gives a full-height grab rail at the dock edge and replaces a ladder mounting bracket.
  • EZ Board boarding steps help you step onto or work on a boat. WetSteps says to measure from the dock edge to the boarding point and subtract 6 in. Specify a left or right handrail. See EZ Boards.
  • Swim-up bar, fish cleaning station, toy holder and high dive are in swim accessories.

Common mistakes

  • Sizing the ladder at high water and coming up short in August.
  • Mounting to a soft or rotted dock edge.
  • Forgetting to say left or right on the EZ Board handrail.

Ladders for EZ Dock and Connect-A-Dock floating docks are in floating dock systems. For help picking a length or mounting a ladder, call 618-294-6905.

Ladders & Swim Accessories FAQ

How many steps does my dock ladder need?

Measure from the top of the dock to the water at normal level and allow for low water late in the season. The WetSteps 5-step ladder drops 52 in. below its mount, and the 6-step reaches deeper for taller docks. Blue Ridge Boat Docks can help you choose.

Why choose a stair-style dock ladder?

WetSteps ladders are angled like stairs with 24 in. wide treads, so swimmers walk out of the water instead of climbing straight up. That is easier for kids, older adults and anyone tired from swimming. The ladders also rotate up out of the water for storage.

Does a WetSteps ladder need to be painted?

It doesn't have to be. WetSteps ladders come in mill finish or powder-coat paint. WetSteps offers painted finishes because bare aluminum discolors in the water. The construction warranty listed for WetSteps products does not cover the powder coat.

How do I size an EZ Board?

WetSteps says to measure from the dock edge to the point where you board the boat and subtract 6 in. The EZ Board uses the same plank design as WetSteps ladder steps, lifts for dry storage, and comes with a left or right side handrail, so specify which you need.

Can Blue Ridge install a dock ladder?

Yes. Blue Ridge Boat Docks installs ladders and swim accessories on docks around Southern Illinois, Kentucky Lake, Lake Barkley and nearby states. Ladders can also be picked up free at the Marion shop or delivered locally for $100 within 50 driving miles.
