Choosing the Right Boat Lift

Every lift on this page is a floating, air-displacement design. A blower pushes air into sealed polyethylene tanks to raise the boat, and venting that air lowers it. Picking the right one comes down to four things: boat weight, hull shape, slip width and water depth.

Measure before you order

  • Boat weight, loaded. Add fuel, batteries, engine and the gear that stays aboard to the dry weight. Choose a lift rated above that number, not right at it.
  • Hull type. V-hull, pontoon, tritoon, wake boat and PWC each need different bunks or arms.
  • Slip width. Econolift lists a slip range for each model, so measure the inside width of your slip.
  • Water depth. Per Econolift, the 4,500 and 6,500 lb models want about 3.5 to 4 ft of water. Shallower slips call for a shallow water model.
  • Power. Econolift lifts run on standard 110V with GFCI protection on every unit.

Side mount, front mount or shallow water

Econolift explains that a side mount lift attaches at four or more points along the slip and carries the full boat weight itself, with less sway in wind. A front mount lift attaches to the front of the slip with three dock brackets, which helps on wide slips or docks that can't take a side attachment. Shallow water lifts spread buoyancy across several low-profile tanks for limited-depth docks.

EZ Dock Aegis

The EZ Dock Aegis is an air-assisted lift that installs between two EZ Dock sections at least 10 ft apart. EZ Dock rates it up to 7,000 lb and 28 ft boats.

Common mistakes

  • Sizing to the brochure dry weight instead of the loaded weight.
  • Ordering before checking depth at the back of the slip, where the stern drops.
  • Mixing tanks, arms or brackets from different lift lines without confirming fit.

Boat Lifts FAQ

What size boat lift do I need?

Start with your boat's loaded weight, including fuel, engine, batteries and gear, and choose a lift rated above it. Then match the lift to your hull type, slip width and water depth. Econolift lists a slip range for each model, and Blue Ridge Boat Docks can help you size one if you call 618-294-6905.

What is the difference between a side mount and a front mount boat lift?

Econolift says a side mount lift attaches at four or more points along the slip and supports the whole boat, so the dock carries none of the weight. A front mount lift attaches to the front of the slip with three dock brackets, rests some weight on the dock and suits wide slips.

How deep does the water need to be for a floating boat lift?

Econolift says its 4,500 and 6,500 lb lifts need roughly 3.5 to 4 ft of water. For limited depth, its Draft shallow water series spreads buoyancy across several low-profile tanks. Measure at the back of the slip, where the stern drops as the lift lowers.
