Choosing Solar and LED Dock Lighting

There are two kinds of lighting on this page. Solar lights charge from their own panel and turn on at dusk with no wiring. Wired LED kits for boat lifts and boat houses run off a lift's power system and are switched by key fob or wall switch.

Solar dock and deck lights

Lake Lite designs and tests its solar marine lights in Indiana. Pick a style by where it mounts:

  • Dock pockets and cleats. Some lights are made to snap into specific dock pockets, including EZ Dock, and most of those need no tools or hardware.
  • Pilings and posts. Piling lights, pagoda lights and round-post lights mount on top of a post.
  • Post caps. Post cap lights are sized to the post, from 3 x 3 in. up to 6 x 6 in. lumber and several composite and vinyl rail systems. Measure the outside of the post.
  • On the water. Solar buoy markers help mark a dock or channel at night.

Browse them in solar dock and deck lighting.

Boat lift and boat house lighting

Lake Lifter kits include LED string lights, canopy bar lights, flood lights and ceiling pod lights. They can be run by key fob or wireless wall switch, and Lake Lifter says they work with its AC/DC all-in-one motor kits. One 24V canopy kit works only with a specific hydraulic controller, so read the fit note on each listing. See boat lift and boat house lighting.

Keep old lights running

Most Lake Lite batteries are user-replaceable. Lake Lite's advice is to match the battery size and minimum capacity the fixture calls for. Replacement batteries cost far less than a new light.

Common mistakes

  • Mounting solar lights in shade, so they never charge fully.
  • Ordering a post cap by nominal lumber size without measuring.
  • Buying a dock-specific light that is made for a different dock pocket.

Solar & LED Lighting FAQ

Do solar dock lights need wiring?

No. Lake Lite solar dock lights charge from a built-in solar panel and switch on automatically at dusk, with no wiring. Many models made for specific dock pockets press or snap in without tools. Wired LED kits for boat lifts and boat houses are a separate option.

How do I pick the right post cap light?

Post cap lights are sized to the outside of the post. This category has caps for 3 x 3 in. posts, 4 x 4 and 5 x 5 in. vinyl, 3-1/2 in. and 6 x 6 in. lumber, and several composite rail systems. Measure your post rather than going by its nominal size.

Can I replace the battery in a solar dock light?

Yes, on most Lake Lite lights. Lake Lite uses user-replaceable LiFePO4 or NiMH cells and advises matching the battery size and minimum capacity your fixture calls for. It rates the LiFePO4 cells in its dock lights for about 2 to 4 years of service.

How are boat lift canopy lights controlled?

Lake Lifter boat lift and boat house lighting kits can be run by a key fob or by wireless wall switches. An additional wireless wall switch syncs to the main control hub and sticks to a flat surface without internal wiring. Check whether a kit is wired or wireless before ordering.

Can Blue Ridge install dock lighting?

Yes. Blue Ridge Boat Docks adds lighting when it builds, repairs or services docks and lifts in Southern Illinois and nearby states. You can also pick up lights free at the Marion shop or use local delivery. Call 618-294-6905 to plan lighting for a dock or boat house.
